We Are all One Family-2^nd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

On Sunday November 20^th we will be making dinner for those in need in our community. In order to make this a success we need your help. Below is a list of things that we need

1.) VOLUNTEERS-to cook and serve at the convent. We will be there from about nine till about 6pm. If you have an hour or two,that would be wonderful. Cooking means:you can cut vegetables;make a salad;help with deserts-there are many things that need to be done.

2.) DONATIONS-turkey gravy,stove top stuffing,cranberry sauce,potatoes,sweet potatoes, sweet potatoes,canned corn, salad dressing, desserts such as cookies pies/cakes. Any non-perishables not used will be donated to our food cupboard.

3.) COMMUNITY SERVICE- If you are in need of community service hours for school,boy scouts, or any other service projects,this does count!

DRCC Announces the construction of a new park

The Delaware River City Corporation is announcing the creation of a riverfront park on 4.5 acres of land immediately south of the Tacony Palmyra Bridge and in front of the City of Philadelphia Water Department’s Lardner’s Point Pump Station, Construction will begin in November of 2011 with park completion anticipated in May 2012. The Lardner’s Point Park project is an initial signature public access point that is part of the larger proposed Delaware Riverfront Greenway envisioned to encompass an approximate eleven-mile trail system along the Delaware River from Allegheny Avenue to Bucks County Line.

The work will include demolition and removal of concrete ramp structures and concrete and asphalt paving throughout the site. A river overlook and fishing pier at the river’s edge will be a part of the new park along with, riparian edge restoration, the creation of tidal wetlands, and the restoration of a riverbank forest area for picnicking and passive recreational activities. The park will be a gateway and trailhead for the Delaware River Heritage Trail and will be a link in the East Coast Greenway that runs from Maine toFlorida. This trailhead will include a drinking fountain, walking trails, park and trail furniture and the necessary infrastructure to support these amenities.

The Greenway Plan for the Delaware River is intended to transform much of the vacant, former industrial properties along the riverfront into a destination frontage that will bring new distinction and identity to the City and stimulate the economy and culture of the entire city.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Saturday, Oct. 29.

Don’t flush away unwanted prescription drugs

The old practice of flushing expired old or unneeded prescription drugs down the toilet is now strongly discouraged since it was found many drugs survive the process and make it into our rivers, and even into drinking water.

And drugs thrown into the garbage could end up in the hands of children and trash pickers.

Now is a great time to go through the medicine cabinet and gather your unwanted or expired prescription drugs in preparation for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Saturday, Oct. 29.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, the Philadelphia Police Department will have drop-off points for old prescription drugs at many fire stations throughout the city.

In and about the 173rd Legislative District, there will be four fire station drop-off sites:

The Tacony Community Development Corporation is accept resumes to fill a newly created full-time position with the organization to help revitalize the Torresdale Avenue commercial corridor in the Tacony neighborhood.

The new commercial corridor manager will work with the Board of Directors of the TCDC and volunteer committees/teams to help organize the Historic Tacony Revitalization Project to revitalize Torresdale and Longshore Avenues in the Tacony neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $45,000 to $65,000.

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss why the Tacony Community Development Corporation (TCDC) is launching the Historic Tacony Revitalization Project now and what they hope to achieve in the next few years. Peter Naccarato, the Board President of the Tacony CDC will also discuss the role of the Retail Market Analysis study being conducted now, and the process the organization will undertake to hire a full time employee this fall to manage the commercial district revitalization work.

After Mr. Naccarato speaks, Donna Ann Harris, principal of Heritage Consulting Inc., a consultant to the Tacony Community Development Corporation will give a twenty minute presentation on “An Introduction to Commercial District Revitalization.” After the presentation, Ms. Harris will facilitate a series of small group discussions where neighbors can identify their major issues and concerns about the Torresdale Avenue commercial district that they wish to see changed. The small groups will present their ideas and Ms. Harris will describe how these concerns fit within the Main Street Four Point Approach™. Small group participants will be encouraged to identify projects to solve some of these problems that might interest them from these lists. The next meeting date will be determined to create committees to move the revitalization effort forward.

All area residents, merchants and property owners are encouraged to attend this kick off meeting for the Historic Tacony Revitalization Project. To learn more about this effort see the back side of this flyer.

What is the Main Street Approach™ to commercial district revitalization?
In recent decades, multiple approaches to commercial district revitalization, from urban renewal to highly-publicized, big-fix redevelopment projects, have failed because they focused on just one or two discreet issues, rather than addressing the full range of inter-related issues that affect each individual commercial district. The Main Street Approach™ is a volunteer driven, historic preservation based economic development program. The Main Street Approach™ works at the local level with community volunteers to help revitalize a commercial corridor. The Historic Tacony Revitalization Project will use the Main Street Four Point Approach™ to organize our efforts.

What is the purpose of the Historic Tacony Revitalization Project?
All local Main Street programs aim to maximize the economic potential of each historic commercial district while preserving its distinct sense of place.

Who is leading this effort for Tacony?
The Tacony Community Development Corporation is spearheading the Historic Tacony Revitalization Project.

What are the benefits of revitalization?
Revitalization generates new reinvestment. Private investment in businesses and commercial properties, and public investment in infrastructure create economic benefits for the entire district. Revitalization supports business growth and job creation. Viable commercial districts provide places for entrepreneurs to succeed, increasing the viability and vitality of the commercial area. Revitalization supports economic growth throughout the community. Downtowns and local districts project the community’s image to visitors and potential investors. Healthy commercial districts reflect a community that cares. Revitalization provides local focus and stability. Economically strong commercial districts serve as an anchor for the community and represent consistent economic growth.

Why should we revitalize the Torresdale Avenue commercial corridor?
Commercial corridors and neighborhood business districts represent jobs and revenues—both vary from community to community, and sometimes represent as much as 30% of local jobs and revenue sources. These commercial districts define the local identity and reflect that community’s history and ‘sense of place.’ Torresdale Avenue, like many other commercial corridors in Philadelphia that are using the Main Street Approach, can become the hub and heart of Tacony once again.

How can local residents become involved?
Your help is needed by becoming involved as a volunteer with Historic Tacony Revitalization project’s Four Teams: Organization; Promotion; Design; and Economic Restructuring. On September 17th our neighborhood will continue its proud tradition with an array of string bands, drum and bugle corps, youth groups, classic and military vehicles making their way up Torresdale Avenue at 11:00 AM! The Parade route is expected to return to Princeton Avenue, where it will turn to Cottage Street, after the long-awaited completion of Phase 1 of the I-95 re-ramping project.

The 20th Annual Disston Festival, held immediately after the Parade at Disston Recreation Center, will feature the usual complement of kiddie rides, games, contests, live music and dancers plus expanded refreshment options. The big feature is always the indoor display of local memorabilia and Tacony history for a nostalgic trip through time.

The Joe McCloskey Memorial Fund is sponsoring a “Barbeque on the Delaware”. The Joe McCloskey Memorial Fund was established to honor one of Tacony’s greatest citizens, Officer Joseph C. McCloskey with a lasting Memorial/Tribute. Joe touched the lives of thousands of Tacony’s young adults from Disston Elementary, Our Lady of Consolation, St. Leo, Abraham Lincoln and Father Judge High School.

The Barbeque on the Delaware will be held next Sunday, September 18^th at the Quaker City Yacht Club. The time is 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person and includes food, beer, soda, door prizes and “live” music. The event will be MC’d by Herb Oakley. The music is being donated by two Tacony groups; Herb Oakley and Friends andTacony Noise. We will finish the afternoon with plenty of Philly style dance music. Horse Shoe pits for those who enjoy a little competition are available. Come out for a great cause and enjoy the company of old and new friends alike.

Tommy Conwell Concert - Third Times a Charm?

Once again, due to the weather, the Tommy Conwell concert will postponed to Thursday, Sept. 15, and will be held at the Disston Recreation Center. The time is 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The TCA apologizes for any inconveniences this may cause, but safety is the number one consideration in making these decisions.”

The concert was to take place two weeks ago, but was pushed back to tonight due to rain. The date is now set for next Thursday.

New Southbound On-Ramp Opens Tuesday At I-95/Cottman Avenue Interchange

Old southbound on-ramp from Princeton Avenue to close following new ramp’s opening

King of Prussia – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will open a new on-ramp to I-95 South at the Cottman Avenue Interchange on Tuesday, Aug. 16 to replace the existing southbound on-ramp from Princeton Avenue, which will close immediately after the new ramp’s opening.

The planned ramp opening and subsequent closing, which are weather dependent, are scheduled to take place mid-day Tuesday.

Situated along Longshore Avenue at State Road, the ramp is one of two new on-ramps planned under PennDOT’s two-stage project to rebuild and improve the Cottman Avenue Interchange and 1.4 miles of I-95 between Bleigh Avenue and Levick Street.

The new Longshore Avenue on-ramp has been built under the on-going first stage of the I-95 Section CPR project (I-95, Section CP1), which also includes improvements to the existing northbound on-ramp from Princeton Avenue and changes to surface roads in the interchange area. A second new southbound on-ramp, which will be accessed from Cottman Avenue east of State Road, will be built under the second stage of the project (I-95, Section CP2) that is scheduled to be under construction in early 2012.

With the new ramp opened, crews on the $31.9 million CP1 project will begin demolishing the old Princeton Aveune on-ramp to I-95 South, including removal of the ramp’s overpass at State Road. Tentative plans call for that overpass to be dismantled during the weekend of Aug. 26-28. State Road traffic will be detoured at Princeton Avenue at that time.

Additionally, PennDOT will implement new traffic patterns on sections of Princeton and Cottman avenues over the next month as crews complete the ramp removal and related improvements to the intersection of Princeton Avenue and State Road. Those new traffic patterns include:

Changing Princeton Avenue from an eastbound-only street to a two-way street between Torresdale Avenue and State Road;
Changing Cottman Avenue from a westbound-only street to a two-way street between Torresdale Avenue and State Road.

In addition, State Road has been widened to include two southbound lanes and one northbound lane between Cottman Avenue and New State Road.

Section CP1 work also is continuing on the existing northbound on-ramp at Princeton Avenue, which is being widened to accommodate a spur ramp that will be built this fall from Milnor Street.

The Greater Philadelphia Roundtable: Join in a discussion of Philadelphia history and issues, and help to shape the project to create an Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia! During 2011-12, our theme is “Phrasing Philadelphia,” as we take a look behind the slogans for the history and ideas that unite and sometimes divide us.

The Holy Experiment

A Quaker, William Penn intended Pennsylvania as a “Holy Experiment” dedicated to tolerance for all religious practices. In this discussion, we focus on religion and faith communities, from the colonial era to the present. The panel will be moderated by Randall Miller of St. Joseph’s University with panelists including Emma Lapsansky-Werner of Haverford College; Maris Gillette of Haverford College (and the Muslim Voices project); Rabbi George Stern of the Neighborhood Interfaith Movement; and Tuomi Forrest of Partners for Sacred Places.

TCA’s Love Your Neighborhood Volunteer Event Recap

Board Members and volunteers welcomed neighborhood residents to the Tacony Library on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 to discuss the various volunteer opportunities available with in the Tacony Civic Association. This event highlighted how neighbors can help neighbors, not only by serving and volunteering, but also through the services each committee provides to residents.

The TCA has several subcommittees devoted to different aspects of neighborhood upkeep. Committee Chairs and volunteers were on hand to explain in detail what each committee does and how residents can become involved. As TCA Secretary Anne Marie Kuvik put it, “there is something for everyone, whether it is helping behind the scenes or the day of a special event.”

TCA Treasurer Linda Salandra summed up the mission of the TCA as helping the residents of Tacony improve the quality of life of the community by devoting attention to specific concerns such as traffic, community clean-up, and zoning, while also fostering a sense of community by hosting events like the Summer Concert Series and Winterfest.

Zoning Louis M. Iatarola

Volunteer members of the zoning committee serve by holding meetings in the community to discuss zoning variances. Currently the City of Philadelphia is revising its Zoning Code. Members of the TCA committee have attended meetings discussing the proposed changes, where their feedback has helped shape the new code.

Residents can report the misuse of properties to the Zoning Committee. Then, the Zoning Committee mediates and works with residents and owners to legalize structures and correct any zoning problems. They listen to concerns of residents and seek feedback from the community. The Zoning Committee will also explain the zoning process, how to seek a variance, and can help residents undertaking new projects.

As such, you are encouraged to attend an important zoning committee meeting to discuss the project to build 14 apartments in the form of seven attached duplexes at 4900 Levick Street. The site is currently zoned for commercial use. It will be 7 PM at the McDonald's on Torresdale Ave. on Monday 2/28.

Public Works Anthony Naccarato

The Public Works Committee deals with issues pertaining to streets, traffic, water, and sewer. Currently the committee has been working with neighbors affected by ramp construction for I-95. Their priority is safety, responsibility for the sites, and quality usage.
Residents can report issues with street lights, potholes, and street signs to the committee, as well as make suggestions for needed traffic controls.

Membership Dawn Ramos

The Membership Committee is responsible for welcoming & informing members. They deliver welcome packets to new homeowners, recruit residents to become TCA members, handle the quarterly newsletter mailings, and staff tables at community events.

The first way you can help is by joining, asking your neighbors to join, and attending the quarterly meetings. Volunteers are always welcome to hand out flyers. Long time volunteer Roseanne Rocco manages the quarterly mailings, but additional help may sometimes be welcomed for special events. Or, spend a few hours manning a table at one of many community events throughout the year.

The TCA hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, ranging form one day occasions such as Winterfest and flea markets, to the popular Summer Concert Series.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of activities. You can fill the role of greeter, serving refreshments, or help with set-up and clean-up on the day of a special event. If you prefer to work behind the scenes, there is always a lot to do to make an event happen.

Clean and Green Troy Everwine

The Clean and Green committee works closely with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Tree Tenders and others to keep area parks clean and replenish trees throughout Tacony. Their next event is the Love Your Park clean-up at Disston Park on Saturday, April 16, 2011, 9am to Noon. Volunteers are needed and most welcome!

Public Relations Troy Everwine

The Public Relations Committee’s job is to get the word out!

The committee is seeking volunteers to inform us of community events, provide relevant community based content for the TCA blog, update the TCA’s Facebook page and blog, and provide pictures from community events. One current goal is to bring together information from neighborhood schools, churches, clubs, and organization and host an online community calendar.
They also write the quarterly newsletter.

The second part of the program will feature a screening of the pilot episode for "Philadelphia: The Great Experiment", a multi-part documentary film on the history of Philadelphia that is currently in-development. Cottman/Princeton Interchange Update

A meeting was held to get feedback on some of the renderings that the PennDot representatives/engineers put together.

The meeting was located at the Sons of Italy on 8/31/10 (4741 Friendship St.) In attendance were about 50 residents of the neighborhood, Tacony Civic and CDC members, Philadelphia City planners, representatives of Joan Krajewski, Mike Stack, and Mike McGeehan, PennDot employees, and KSK Architectural Firm.

Phase 1 of the project Will be completed by Jan.2011 and Phase 2 will start directly afterward (estimated completion date is late 2013/early 2014). The total cost of both projects will be $225,000,000.

Some great ideas were on display tonight. A lot of positive feedback was given from the citizens of Tacony. We discussed which lighting suits the underpasses below 95 (Bleigh, New State Rd, Cottman, Princeton, Longshore, Magee, and Unruh) along with some ideas for signage, murals, and formliners to make the area aesthetically appealing.

Developers are still discussing Condos at the Disston Saw Works grounds( the area by State Road and Magee) and it will be a great boost if building starts in the next few years.

WANTED : FRIENDS OF DISSTON PARK

A sub-committee of the Tacony Civic Association Clean & Green Committee will be partnering with the Historical Society of Tacony's Arboretum Committee to form a Friends of Disston Park "network".

The object is to form a team of volunteers who will help organize events, sponsor clean-ups and oversee watering and gardening activities. This is especially important to sustain over 20 new trees planted this Spring and harvest the new community garden between Unruh and Magee Avenues.

All interested neighbors are urged to call the Civic Association at 215 338 2575 ext 1 to register as a Friend of Disston Park. Volunteers and friends will receive a semi-annual newsletter to update events and activies at this historic stretch of Tacony greenspace.

I-95 Update

I Just left an very informational and enlightening meeting at the Tacony Music Hall with PENNDOT Engineers, Tacony Civic Association President Mary Benussi, Zoning Chairman and former Civic President Lou Iatorola, Streets Chairman and also fromer Civic President Anthony Naccarato, and Representatives from State Rep. Mike McGeehan's office about the future/development of the neighborhood during the completion of the first phase of the 95 Revive project. Phase 1 is "scheduled" to be completed by May 2011. Phase 2 will start soon there after.

Homeowners on Princeton Ave.(below Torresdale) should keep their eyes and ears open about a meeting in the near future about the lighting and the planting of new trees along the newly finsihed area. Before anything is started, the homeowners/businesses will get a chance to see a rendering of the proposed project and they will be asking for feedback and suggestions.

The developer that owns the riverfront property off Magee St. plans to build new townhomes within the next 3-5 years. The "new" Tacony Academy Charter School may be relocating to that vicinity also. This will be a positive asset to the future of our neighborhood. Soon after, there are some ideas to open a farmers market down on the Tacony riverfront. The positive chain reaction will soon follow. So lets stay upbeat and participate in the Civic Meetings and Community Events about the future changes in Tacony. The Delaware River City Corporation along with PENNDOT will be develop bike paths, walking trails and more green spaces before and after both phases of the 95 Revive project.

New Engine 38 Firehouse News

As you may know we lost our firehouse last year for the Interstate 95 expansion project. This was Tacony's 2nd firehouse. Ironically our first firehouse was razed to make way for I-95 too.

Each of firehouse was very much of their era. The first, built in the last 1800s, was Victorian. The 2nd, built in the 1950s or 60s, was a modern brick building in somewhat of an international style. Our new firehouse will be extremely modern and will be completely green. It will be the City of Philadelphia's first totally green building. This project falls under the 1% for public art. The artist, Zhao Suikang, is formulating his ideas and has not developed the total concept yet. It is expected to involve multiple small bronze sculptures and plaques along a pathway in Disston Park. He got great information on Tuesday and is coming back for more in depth discussions. What have heard so far has us very excited. The artist hopes to obtain some equipment, artifact or apparatus symbolizing the saw works that he can create a sculpture with. He's pretty juiced up about this project, and he's done some pretty amazing stuff. Also he factored no salary into the project and is contributing all his time, devoting the whole budget to materials. His website: www.zhaosuikang.com.

This interactive class will increase students understanding of the properties of water. Our Mad Scientist will encourage children to become problem solvers as they clean up a simulated oil spill with as little damage to the environment as possible. Calling young photographers entering grades 6-9 to enter our “Tacony in the Frame” photo contest!
Be inspired by the book Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce in which the characters look at their town with fresh eyes and see its hidden beauty. Take your camera into the streets of Tacony and look for the unusual, hidden, or beautiful sights all around you. This could be a view from an alternative angle, your favorite place to go in Tacony, the contrast of old and new together, or simply a small detail in the street that stands out to you. Win a digital camera and other cool prizes! Cameras will be provided for each participant.
Registration forms for the contest can be picked up at Tacony Library between June 7- July 9.

Our Voice Needs to be Heard! Please Take Action Now!
You've heard from us a lot lately, but that's because there's critical work left to be done to protect Philadelphia's parks and recreation. Please participate in the 2nd round of letters and calls to City Council. Thank them for supporting the Mayor's proposed budget for FY 2011 and call on them to go back to the table and find the revenue to make that budget a reality! Without their help, a portion of the funding proposed for the Department of Parks and Recreation may be cut in the Mayor's attempt to make ends meet. The Department can't afford anymore cuts! On top of decades of underfunding, parks and recreation have both been cut by almost 28% since January, 2009 - plus a $1 million reduction for tree maintenance and planting. Volunteers Needed!!!

On Saturday May 8th, the Tacony Civic Association and Spring into Your Park
are hosting a park cleanup at Disston Park.

The cleanup will run from 9am until 12 noon.

We will be meeting at the corner of
Longshore and Disston Streets. All gloves and snacks will be provided.

We also welcome high school and college students who may have community service
hours to complete. If interested in helping out, please contact us at taconycivic@gmail.com.

The Music Hall has been selected as the site of a press conference Friday morning by Allyson Scwartz regarding legislation she's introducing to improve the federal tax credit program for historic preservation.

The press conference will be at 9:30am. Everyone is welcome.

A nice crowd joined us for our second concert of the season featuring 45 RPM. Though the skies were threatening, the music was terrific. Special thanks to the Pennsylvania National Guard for providing tents to keep us dry! Here 45RPM takes the stage!

In celebration of their 150th year, the Zoo has provided TCA with 150 free tickets for Sunday, July 26th. Doors open at 9:30am.
